Pantera Biyografi

Kuruluş
Pantera, 1981 yılında davulda Vinnie Paul Abbott, gitarda kardeşi Dimebag Darrell Abbott, bas gitarda Tommy Bradford, vokalde Donnie Hart ve gitarda Terry Glaze kadrosu ile kuruldu. Grup, ilk başlarda yerel klüplerde sahne alıyor ve etkilendikleri gruplardan(Kiss ve Van Halen gibi) parçalar çalıyordu. Öte yandan glam metal türünde kendi parçalarını da yazıyorlardı. 1982 yılında vokalist Donnie Hart'ın ayrılmasıyla vokali Terry Glaze devraldı. Daha sonra basçı Tommy Bradford yerine de, Abbott kardeşler gibi grubun dağılışına kadar kalacak olan Rex Brown kadroya dâhil oldu.

Glam dönemleri
1983'ten itibaren vokalist Terry Glaze ile üç albüm yayınladılar(Metal Magic,Projects in the Jungle ve I Am the Night). Terry Glaze kendi grubu Lord Tracy'yi kurmak için Pantera'dan ayrılınca yerine Phil Anselmo gruba katıldı. Phil Anselmo ile yine glam metal tarzında olan Power Metal adlı albüm kaydedildi. Daha sonraları grup bu dört albümü kendileri bile görmezden geliyorlardı ki resmi sitelerinde bile bu dört albüm yer almamaktadır.

Yeni Bir Tarz ve Efsanenin Doğuşu
Glam Metal tarzındaki 4 albümden sonra grubun asıl çıkışı 1990 tarihli Cowboys From Hell albümüyle oldu. Bu albümde Pantera'nın müziği belirgin olarak klasik heavy metal etkilenimlerine sahipti ve vokalde de Rob Halford stili dikkat çekiyordu. Gitarist Dimebag Darrell'ın riffleri ve soloları da önceki albümlerden farklı olarak oldukça keskin ve karmaşıktı. Grubun yeni tarzı power groove olarak da anıldı. Birçok fan ve hatta Pantera'nın kendisi bile Cowboys From Hell'i ilk resmi albümleri olarak kabul ediyordu. Bu albüm ayrıca grubun popüler hitleri Cemetery Gates ve çoğu kişi tarafından bir groove metal marşı olarak görülen Cowboys From Hell'i de içeriyordu.

Grubun en önemli patlaması 1992 tarihli Vulgar Display of Power'la oldu. Bu albümden eleştirmenler ve fanlar arasında sık sık grubun en önemli işi olarak bahsedildi. Açılış şarkısı "Mouth for War", hızlı ve agresif "Fucking Hostile", ana riffi çok ünlü olan "Walk" albümdeki en popüler parçalar olarak yerini aldı.

90'ların başında fırtına gibi esen Pantera'nın başarısı 1994'te çıkar çıkmaz Amerikan listelerine bir numara olarak giren ve bu başarıya ulaşan ilk metal albümü olan Far Beyond Driven ile devam etti. Albümün en tanınmış hiti I'm Broken ve bir diğer klibi Five Minutes Alone, MTV müzik kanalında sık sık kendine yer buldu. Far Beyond Driven, "En İyi Metal Performansı" dalında 37.Grammy Ödülleri ne aday oldu.

Pantera'nın sonraki albümü, The Great Southern Trendkill, 1996 yılında, grunge'ın yükselişi ve rap metal'in doğuşu sırasında piyasaya sürüldü. Bu albüm, çıkarıldığı zamanın da etkisiyle orta derecede ilgi gördü ve sık sık Pantera'nın "gözden kaçan" albümü olarak nitelendi. Vokalist Phil Anselmo bu albümün vokallerini Nine Inch Nails grubunun vokalisti Trent Reznor'ın stüdyosunda kaydetti. The Great Southern Trendkill, grubun diğer albümlerine göre daha karanlık ve sert bir atmosfere sahipti. Sözlerde, vokalist Phil Anselmo'nun bu albümden önce uyuşturucu sebebiyle yaşadığı sorunlar(aşırı dozda uyuşturucudan yaklaşık 4 dakikalığına kalbi durmuştur) ve etkileri, özellikle "Suicide Note pt.1,pt.2" ve "Living Through Me(Hell's Wrath)" adlı parçalarda açıkça görülebilmektedir. Bu albümün en beğenilen parçasının, albümde klibe sahip olan tek şarkı olan "Drag the Waters" olduğu söylenebilir.

Grubun canlı performanslarından bazıları, 1997 tarihli Official Live:101 Proof adlı albümde toplanmıştır. Albümde 14 canlı parçanın yanında daha önce yayınlanmamış 2 parça("Where You Come From" ve "I Can't Hide") yer alır.
